I used to have a '97 900 SET. I traded it ( sort of, long story ) on a 328i, which i still have. I still miss the saab in some ways. The BMW of course has it's strong points, but the saab had such personality. I am thinking of getting a new 9-3 sometime again. Maybe a 9-5. I like the inside/outside look of the 9-5 better, but it seems the 9-3 has better(newer) engineering.
Question: i saw in an article a claim that saab will be introducing a 9-3 hatchback again. That's really what i would want. Does anyone have any insight on this? That would close the deal for me, i think. I dug that hatch.
Other question: the biggest reason i liked the 328 over the 900 was the BMW had much better handling & ride in certian situations, most notably quick transitions ( zigzags ) or off camber/bumpy turns, yet the BMW had a more compliant, quiet ride. Is the new 9-3 at the level of an e36 in these regards? This question is not directed to BMW bashers. Remember, i do think fondly of my old 900, but i love my bimmer too. ;) But i think the new 3-series is a bit numb and i think the new styling sucks, and the price is a bit high compared to the 9-3 when you consider features. Actually, a 9-5linear is cheaper than a 328 similarly equipped with more Hp, torque, better mileage, and a lot more room.
I understand that the turbo lag is mostly dialed out(9-3). That's good. I used to drive the cars near santa/fe taos and the HP was great, but the turbo lag at that altitude was insane. Even the BMW was down more HP at those altitudes, it was much better to drive there, especially on those twisty roads. :)
The old 900 also broke a *lot*. I understand i may have just been very unlucky, but i'd get a new one and just see what happenes over the course of 3-4 years and decide what to do at that point.
The torque steer never did bother me that much.
I think the depreciation issue is overblown. So what if the saab depreciates more than a bmw if it cost me 7K less in the first place? 7K plus interest will cover the deprecation then some. And i shopped my 27.5K (used) bmw after 3 years and 50K miles and was offered $9000 by a dealer as a trade! I could have gotten a similar mileage & equipped used saab for 18K and given it away.
