I know I can optimal mpg by keeping steady foot. I just can't resist that lure of that locomotive 70-110 pull when the highway suddenly falls open on a long road trip.
Sometimes I wish there was a variance meter on the mph and mpg avg, as well as whole bunch of other data.
Its one of those things I do to loosely "score" my own drive: plus points for mpg and mph and plus points for smoothness in getting past slower traffic. Plus points also for intentional hammer down for thrill's sake, especially if I put/close distance on a speeding partner in a cool car.
Minus points for failing to downshift smoothly/at the right time, lane changes that get me nowhere or that cut off or would reasonably cause other drivers to break their own rhythm, and sudden acceleration/braking that could have avoided by better foresight.
Fast, smooth, efficient, controlled = good
Jerky, reactionary, stressful, wasteful = bad
The things I learn from my Saab!
