Mine wasn't particularly audible (or I never paid too much attention to it) until truck-tire shrapnel hit the underside of my car on the highway. I thought it knocked something out of place or damaged the condenser or something, and I don't have the $37.50 to run to my Saab dealer every time I have a question, so I was going to let it be.
In my car, there is an INCREDIBLE lack of power when the A/C button is pressed (manual climate control), no matter the fan setting or temperature, so I don't use it unless I have to. I try to turn it on at least once a month (and drive the 10mph top speed with A/C on) to keep it lubed and working, as people have said in other posts. The lack of power could be more related to low engine compression based on my current headgasket failure -- I put coolant in the car at least once a month and don't see a drop of it on the driveway, so I'm almost positive I need the $800 surgery, not to mention the associated flushes. But hey, that's what summer jobs are for...
So remember: your A/C is loud, but it could be worse!! ;-P
