I know what probably broke. If you remove the glove compartment (as shown in Richard Bevan's audio upgrade guide at http://www.saabnet.com/sites/richard.bevan/fitting.html), remove the passenger kick panel (panel next to the radio, climate control, etc.), and look in at the back of the climate control unit, you should be able to get a good idea of how the low-tech manual system works. The air direction knob (the one that broke on your car) is just a plastic arm with a very superficial plastic hinge to accomodate the angle change between the dial and the actual control buried somewhere deep in the dash. You may have some luck taping it back together (if this is indeed what broke), or you may be able to use your hand to move the white plastic arm to a more tolerable position (defrost?) and just live with whatever setting you turn it to.
Good luck! I took these items out of my car yesterday to install an amp, and it only took about an hour to remove and reinstall them, and it was the first time I had dealt with either of these areas of the car.
