Hi,
I'm absolutely terrified as my Check Engine light came on yesterday. I went through many posts on the board and have found it often isn't a big deal, but I'd really appreciate any advice.
The car: 1999 9-3 SE, 44K miles, automatic transmission
I bought this car used last January and it's always run perfect and checked out well when inspected by both a Saab dealer as well as an independent mechanic. The problem occurred yesterday on my first major road trip as follows:
I was driving around 83 mph on cruise control (if it matters, A/C was on and it was around 95 degrees outside) and I was getting low on gas...the SID showed 23 miles until empty. I was going up a gradual incline and suddenly the car kind of hiccupped...losing power and disengaging from cruise control. My Check Engine light came on and so I immediately pulled over and opened the hood. Everything looked fine so I guess I was praying it was just low on gas since I was in the middle of nowhere. I knew there was a gas station in less than 5 miles so I continued at a slow speed. The entire way, it was periodically losing power, the Check Engine light would flash a few times, and then just as I got to the gas station it really was sputtering and gasping just to slowly pull in.
So...I filled the car up, and as it seemed to look and sound fine, I nervously drove the rest of the 250 miles home. The Check Engine light continued to remain lit, but I have to admit the car seemed to run perfectly. Temp gauge was pegged at 9-o'clock as usual, turbo worked fine, oil was good, and no more sputtering or power losses at all.
Any ideas?? Again, I'm terrified here. Was I just low on gas? If it was simply out of gas then I would have hoped the Check Engine light would reset and turn off. For that matter, is there any way to turn this light off??? There's no message or anything on the SID, just the Check Engine light. I'm certainly going to get it to a mechanic but I wanted to see how problematic this might be.
Thanks so much for your time and advice.
