Which! - the most respected UK consumer maagazine, has just undertaken a review of car reliability. The 9-3 (non-SS) did not do so well, which is a bit of a pity
Here is a summary that I have just been sent (by my Mother rather than anything official!)
But then again...so what.. I love my 9-3 - if I hadn't have wanted a Saab I wouldn't have bought one...

...The table in the article showed the percentage of cars up to two years old that were breakdown-free during the last twelve months. Survey covered 32,926 reports from Which members. Top with 100% (no breakdowns) were Honda Accord, Honda Jazz, Mazda 323, Nissan Almera Tino, Nissan X-Trail, Smart Car (Surprised?), and Toyota Celica.
The average of all cars was 94% with 24 cars between 94 & 99% 21 cars below the 94% average was Saab 9-5 at 90% Another 11 and then comes Saab 9-3 at 85% Next comes Mercedes E-Class at 84%,
then Citroen C3 at 83%
then Ford Galaxy at 82%
and finally Audi TT at 75% (that is, a 1 in 4 chance of breaking down in a year).
Hence Saab 9-3 was fifth from bottom.
There is a footnote against the Saab 9-3 and several others that the information is for the previous version of model, not the current one - which I presume is what you mean by pre-2002 model.
To be fair, Which does say that "As cars become more complex, it seems that engine electrics (alternators, immobilisers and engine management systems, for example) are becoming a major cause of breakdowns." This was what let the Audi TT down especially.
It also says in the article that Saab 9-3 has dropped 15% on its position in the 2001 table
Overall reliability (breakdowns, faults and problems) puts Saab in the 'Average ' group -along with my Proton.
7 manufacturers in 'Best ' Group - all Japanese plus Smart car 3 in 'Good' Group 17 in 'Average' Group 11 in 'Poor' Group
