I had a chance to drive Linear for a day as a loaner. Sedan look had its own attractiveness, even though I still like Viggen's look with its unmistakable back spoiler. And, I think i prefer the 9-3 front to the new sharper look. IMHO, 9-3's front look smarter without being flashy, but still stylish enough. But, considering you have to change it to sell these days, I think it's one of the best looking cars.

Inside, it's so much roomier in SS than in 9-3. The passenger seat foot well in 9-3 is downright cramped. I also liked the rubbery finish to the buttons. I hope it doesn't attract much dirt though. The new location of SID felt too far sometimes, but very logical. Much more convenient to change something while driving. I prefer the cruise control in 9-3. The signal control itself was too loose in SS and to cruise up and down the whole stick moved up and down and sometimes turned on the signal. But, I definately liked the permanent cruise on switch. On the right side, the intermittant wiper control was better in SS. In 9-3 you can't reach the middle of the stick without leaving the wheel.

Driving was a whole another story. I understand people in Trollhattan never intended these two cars to be compared, but just for the hack of it. First of all, Linear was peppy enough, but still much weaker than Viggen. It felt peppy in low gears but in high gears it was incomparable. Also, the throttle response was much slower in Linear. I don't know because it was AT, but it seemed like there is a very noticeable turbo lag. In Viggen, it's step on it and thrown back immediately. In Linear, step on it-wait a full second-and the engine would growl with acceleration. And, the manual shift mode in AT drove better but shifted way too slow. Now, I appreciate a true manual in my Viggenso much after driving auto Linear. I don't think I'll ever buy an AT. Just boring.

I'm sure Arc and vector would be much better than Linear, but still I seriously doubt any of the current SS can challenge my love for my ol' mighty Viggen. Viggen is a real driver's car!

Regards to all,

B

PS- with softer shocks, the ride was simply civilized in Linear compared to Viggen. Viggen's a wild animal in that regard. I like a wild ride better than a harsh ride ;-)
