Are you talking about a new (2003/2004) 9-3ss? If so, we don't have much data on them yet, but people seem to like them.
The older 9-3 series (1999-2002) is a good car. I bought my '99 9-3 at 43,000 miles. I've had one mechanical problem since then, and although it caused a little noise, it did not affect the performance of the car. I had it taken care of at the 50,000 mile service for about $150.
The car has been at the dealer twice since I bought it: for an oil change, and for the 50k service. I hope to put a few hundred thousand miles on it before I let it go :)
Like Mike said, there have been a few documented problems with these cars. The HVAC system gets stiff, especially on the 1999 model year. With manual control, this usually results in things breaking, and it can be an expensive repair. With ACC, it often results in a clicking noise when the ACC tries to change the settings, but as far as I've read, things don't break.
The '99s also had some incorrectly torqued bolts on the engine head that resulted in leaky gaskets. A simple re-torque of the bolts fixed most people's problems.
DI cassettes will fail, and the time at which they do seems to be pretty unpredictable, although most are after at least 60,000 miles. The part is expensive (~$300), but it's about the easiest DIY fix you could imagine. Much easier than changing a flat tire, for example. People keep a spare in their cars, just like having a spare tire, to do a simple roadside fix if necessary.
All in all, take care of the car, and it will keep running for a long time. Oh yeah, and it's a very safe car, as well.
