I suspect you'll find a couple of general reasons/excuses people cite for not running their SAABs in autocrosses (especially newer models (NG900, 9-3, 9-5)):
- Expensive to repair, anything breaks it is not typically cheap compared to the Civics, Neons, Minis, Integra, etc.
- Do not understand how to drive the car. Learning how to master the turbo, shifting, and handling is not as easy as some other vehicles.
- Tweaking. Not as easy or cheap to toss parts into. A dedicated SAABista will go the extra mile and add parts but again, difficult to throw some cones and risk blowing $$$ on parts that are not too low in price.
Personally, if I can get mine running stable enough and out of the repair mode I would love to try it. With the right rubber, SAS bar, shocks, and driver I think a 9-3 could stand up as a decent performer. I think Nick at Taliaferro runs his on a regular basis, used to have photos on the website. I miss going out to the runs, all of my previous cars ran well at Solo II events ('96 200SX SE-R, '95 Neon, '91 Civic Si, '84 Civic WagoVan (damn fun car to solo) and a '84 Civic base).
Not sure how they class them now-a-days either... G or H now?
If you can run yours, I encourage it. It would certainly help bolster the image of SAABs as a performance vehicle. And with the early 9-3 models plummeting in price they represent a decent alternative to the VW/Honda crowd that is over abundant at most autocrosses. The low price should help offset some of the apprehension towards the repair costs should they occur.
I'm sure others will toss in their opinions, but this is my .02.
