9-3 suspension woes...

i'm getting precious little in the way of dampening from my front passenger side--hitting a manhole cover that's an inch below the pavement sounds/feels like the end of the world... depressing the front end of the car by hand definitely reveals some rebound--and more on the damaged side so i'm suspecting a bad strut/shock assembly. i suppose that it could be a damaged ball joint as well. any ideas to hone in on the diagnosis (before taking things apart)? anyone had any similar experiences? the car is a '99 9-3 w/52,000 miles (low miles but western pennsylvania roads...).
if it turns out to be the struts, i was thinking about going the distance and getting a whole new suspension package. any recommendations? is it worth it? i'm a bit leery of swapping out shocks and springs and being left with a drastically lowered car that becomes impractical for ski season and rough curb cuts the world over (plus i'm sort of past the point in my life where i want that street-sweeping drastically lowered look... :-) that being said, viggen-lowered is still cool.
thanks in advance for any ideas!
joe
