Part of an "enviromental issue". Lots of problem with Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Dean,...Cannister Purge Valve?, Thom, Fri, 15 Aug 2003 09:26:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
the system on all cars.
The whole fuel tank system is on a closed circuit, not allowing any fumes out in open air except when gas cap is opened.
Since the tank needs to breath in some way, they have this charcoal cannister system with valve and vacuum lines going from tank to intake manifold, storing gas fumes until the car is driven in a certain manner.
The valve opens and dumps the fumes into the intake manifold.
The valve is a simple solenoid on/off valve but seems to have a high failure rate (not as much on Saabs as for Volvos).
If the cars computer system feels that the tank is venting fumes at the wrong time, the CEL is triggered and a fault code is logged.
