Get yourself a good quality 6-point socket set and 3/8" drive socket wrench. The oil plug is 13mm. stay away from 1/2" drive, it's way too easy
to over torque with that much leverage.
Replace the washer every time you change oil. Some people use copper washers. I use the kind with a bonded plastic edge. Either one is fine.
Change your oil first thing in the morning when the engine is cold but only after taking the car for a short spin around the block. This will help suspend contaminates in the oil. Don't drive very long at all. It is not necessary to bring it up to operating temperature. The only thing you accomplish by doing this is burning your fingers and most likely dropping the oil plug in pan of hot oil. Not fun.
To get most of the oil out of the sump raise the car on its front right jacking point until the tire is almost off the ground. I changed oil last week and nearly got four whole quarts out. I let mine drain for a good half hour or so.
Don't forget to use a jack stand in addition to whatever you use to raise the car - we almost lost a member of this board a short while ago due to a jack slipping. And remember to firmly apply the parking brake AND block the opposite rear wheel.
Since there is tons of access room to the oil filter you should be able to loosen and tighten the oil filter by hand. Of course, if the quick lube boys put the last filter on you can bet you'll need a wrench to get it off!
When reinstalling the new filter put a few drops of new oil on the rubber gasket and spread it evenly over the entire surface with your finger. Wipe off as much old oil from the mating surface on the engine and screw the filter on until it meets the gasket, then tighten the filter by hand another 3/4 or one full turn. You should never have to use a filter wrench.
After insuring the plug is reinstalled and properly torqued, lower the car
and pour in three and a half quarts of oil, start the engine and run at idle for a few minutes, shut it off, wait about five minutes and check the oil level. Also inspect the plug and filter for leaks. Top up the oil to the top of the square on the dip stick and you're all done.
Good Luck, and remember to use only a high quality synthetic oil.
