Silver polish on plastic

A couple of months ago I had the windshield replaced by a glass shop. Later I saw there was a small "frosted" area on the plastic instrument cluster cover just over the lighted miles display (might not have noticed otherwise). A technician could have rested a tool there with some kind of solvent on it?--don't know. I searched the net for 'plastic polish' and there are several kinds that look good, $8-10 range. I only needed a small amount. Came across a site that explained how to make a prism out of hard plastic, and said the final buffing could be done with silver polish. My wife had some "Wright's Silver Cream." I tried it on several scrap pieces of hard plastic. It seemed to work, and did no harm. I cleaned the instrument cluster in the lower left corner to be sure there was no dust or grit (could make things worse fast), then took some silver polish on the end of a q-tip. It took a lot of rubbing (that's an extremely fine abrasive), but gradually in about 15 minutes the plastic was absolutely clear again in that spot. Pretty amazing. I don't know how it would work on larger areas like the whole panel. Other brands of polish might work differently, so I would caution, but worth a try if you have some around the house.
