My 2000 9-3 base model has a little over 56,000 on the odometer and has been running fine, but wouldn't you know it, the check engine light came on today, and being the holiday (Labor Day), nobody was open for me to go get it checked.
I had been visiting my brother and his family about an hour from home and I noticed the CEL when I started the Saab up to leave today. Knowing a loose fuel cap can be a cause for this problem, I stopped, checked that, but it seemed to be fine. Started up again, the CEL was still on, but the car seemed to running OK, so I started to head back home. I drove a few miles and then pulled over and decided to call the dealer just to see if they thought I should continue on home as long as the car was running OK. I got the receptionist at the dealer, but only the sales staff was on duty today, so she patched me through to Saab Roadside Assistance (even though I am out of warranty). They said that as long as the car was still running OK, it was probably safe to drive it the 50 miles back home, but to get it checked on Tuesday. Well, as soon as I got off my cell phone and started the car, the CEL was off and remained off the rest of the way home. About a mile from my house I made a quick stop at the grocery store and when I started the car, the CEL was back on (after being off for over 40 miles).
So, does this sound like a DI cassette on its way out, could there be something wrong with my fuel cap, or perhaps something else? The "on again, off again" CEL has me leaning toward a marginal DI cassette. Either way, since the car seems to be running OK, is it safe to drive it in to the dealer (about 20 miles away) to get checked out tomorrow?
