You want to remove the entire pipe, inside and out. Once you cut the outside, the inside piece comes off. The shot below might help illustrate better. The new pipe goes into the box a few inches..
Thin walled piping is a bit harder to find than schedule 40 pvc, but I got a 10 foot piece at Lowe's for less than $4.00.
If you really have trouble finding some, e-mail, I'll send you a piece. After all I still have 9 Feet of the pipe left.
I did stray from REM's instructions a bit using a 3" to 4" bell and added rubber tubing around the opening as someone suggested here on the BB's. It really cleaned up the job, looking much more finished and professional.
You should give this a try, you can always go for the cone intake later, but I think you'll be really satisfied with the results of this mod.
