Replacement of factory CD in 1999 9-3 SE - long

My CD player died the other day and no amount of lens cleaning is helping the situation. I went over to a nearby circuit city to look at options and was told that the "upgraded" setup in the SE models may require a substantial amount of work to replace the stock head unit:
1) According to the techs, the SE systems with bass speakers in the doors have a separate amp that powers all the speakers and simply gets a signal from the factory radio/CD. As a result, it would be necessary to locate the separate amp and tap into the speaker wiring from there...
2) They also stated that my original factory speakers may be 8 ohm and thus woul need to be replaced since aftermarket radio units are designed to run 4 ohm equipment.
3) Purchasing a 2 din radio (GM/Chrysler direct replacement) may work, but the compartment that houses the original SAAB unit has no provision for mounting anything other than the factory unit.
I have seen some postings by people who have converted to a single din setup via the European SAAB radio kit (mount and sleeve), but am unsure if those were for the base model radios or not. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
