The shaft still rotates, so I can get redirect the air flow to each position. However, one of the two prongs that inserts into the knob is broken. The knob broke when I tried to turn it to the defrost position. It looks like the previous owners just kept replacing the knobs because there were a few pieces of broken plastic behind both knobs. I fixed the knobs by securing the broken piece by wrapping some thin wire around the circumferance of female end and using some bonding compound. It shouldn't break like that again.
I think I need to just replace the shaft and grease up the drum like the TSB suggests. Is this what you did? Did you just follow the protocol that Saab put out?
Thanks for your input
