as soon as I tried fitting a full size spare in the trunk and saw that it didn't fit all that well, the hamster that runs my brain got excited. Before I knew it, I was figuring out a layout and choice material for my trunk liner. Seems like a good winter project if you ask me.
I was thinking MDF with some sort of rubber padding on the top and bottom to prevent vibration, and some sort of latching mechanism and hinge to make the top open up nicely. The trick will probably be in mating this insert to the area near the lower rear seat crossmember. Haven't decided if I'll raise the trunk floor enough to make the whole thing level or not (there's maybe a 1-2" rise in the trunk floor right before getting to the rear seatback). We'll see...perhaps lining the top of the insert in some scrap trunk fabric would work too. So many ideas!
In the meantime, I'll just throw a full-size spare in the trunk whenever I'm going a fair distance, just in case.
Cheers,
Mark
