There's a zillion things that could set it off. Loose gas cap is only one... Some of the emmissions systems throw warnings, then if the problem goes away by itself, it takes several engine-starts before it quits lighting up.
Many of the more serious codes get stored, even after the light goes out. You're out of warranty, so you could go to AutoZone & have them plug in a reader for free. Ask for the code #, not just the guy's description. If it's something serious then you can pick a dealer or indie shop...
