I am contemplating upgrading the audio system in my Viggen as follows and would appreciate and feedback / suggestions - see questions / concerns at the end:
Head Unit: Nakamichi CD400
- I had the predecessor to this unit, the CD45z, in my Audi Coupe Quattro and absolutely loved it. The sound is unmatched and I liked the style, very classy and understated. Blends well with European / Saab dash.
Amplifier: Nakamichi PA1004
- Pulled this amp from the Audi before selling. Very nice 50x4 watt amp, and the best part is I already paid for it.
Speakers: 6 1/4" Components to replace the door and dash speakers up front. 6x9" co-ax speakers in the rear. No particular brand in mind, but was considering going with Nakamichi to complete the system or Diamond Audio. Had their mid-range series in the Audi and loved them - very natural sound. Speakers need to be listened to - no two sets of ears prefer the same.
XM radio: Delphi Roady
- Comes out in September (similar to SkyFi). Would link directly to aux. inputs on the cd400 and mount infront of the shifter in the "cutout" below heated set controls. Antenna is much smaller than existing satellite antennas and would mount it on the rear parcel shelf.
QUESTIONS:
- Steering wheel controls: I do not want to lose these. I could care less about the display of the channel (I am assuming this will be lost), but appreciate the ease/safety of these controls. Anyone have experience with the SWI-X adapter from pac-audio.com? Will the night panel switch still shut off the lights on the stereo?
- Where to mount the amp: Anyone have any clever ideas aside from the trunk floor or rear seat-back? The amp is approx 2x12x18.
- How does the factory standard DIN mounting kit look (Taliaferro)? Does it look factory? Do the platic colors/textures match the existing dash? I don't want it to look tacky.
Thanks and appreciate your thoughts.
PS - Just installed the Black Pearl Grill and it looks great.
