After a little disassembling of my rear trunk area tonight, I've found out the following:
1) a full size spare will fit in the well, although it requires that you push the styrofoam tool out of the way slightly. Also, the screw-down cap that holds the mini-spare in place does not attach (to my rim anyway). The tire is a snug fit, and I took it around the block with the seats down, windows closed and radio/fan off, and could only hear the faintest slippage of the styrofoam against the bare metal. With the seats up, you couldn't hear a thing. I still might have a tool shop make an adapter to securely tie down the spare (the benefit of working at a University with some lab techs who would gladly do something like that! :-) )
2) with the full size spare in and the carpet laid on top, the trunk floor is raised (at most) 2.5" above normal (and that was with a 215/45/17 tire). There would be additional room for placing a small, shallow tool holder, but I'm no longer convinced that this is a worthwhile addition since I am still able to use the styrofoam insert.
3) the only place to secure a spare DI would be along the passenger side fender, but it would have to extend up through a small hole already existing in the carpet, above the tail lamp assembly. This still might be a good idea, because it keeps the DI out of harm's way, and should always be accessible, even with a trunk full of groceries. If I end up doing this, I'll post pictures and dimensions, assuming that it works well.
That's it for now...as this progresses, I'll post more info. If anyone is thinking about doing this themselves, by all means, go ahead.
Cheers,
Mark
