There is no doubt that the Japanese cars will be more trouble-free over the long haul. But you hit the nail on the head about being tired of the McCar feel of driving a Honda from A to B every day. The SAAB will cost more to own but if cared for (and make sure the previous owner did via maintenance records, carfax, etc) will provide a much more enjoyable driving experience.
As for people posting on here with horror stories, keep in mind there are thousands of owners who don't post here because they've never had a serious problem with their car. In addition you'll find that many of the posts here are from people interested in taking a 9-3 and making it better, faster, stronger, etc rather than trying to fix a specific problem.
Request all service records for the car to verify that all service intervals have been completed. If the current owner is not a dealer any SAAB dealer should be able to get the records using the VIN. You may also want to invest in a CarFax report to see if the car has ever been in an accident. You will still have some warranty left on that car so you should be in good shape if everything else checks out.
