Saab's OE oil for this car is "Synthetic Blend," but it's a proprietary oil with a diesel-oil-style additive package. It's good for maybe 5k miles at the most. You could "blend your own" by mixing something like Delvac 1300 15W-40 & Mobil 1 xW-30.
The safest thing to use is Mobil 1. JimBlake is right, the best rating (& Saab's preferred recommendation) is ACEA A3, & only M1's 0W-40 & 15W-50 offer that. (All of the M1 xW-30s are now rated ACEA A5, & that's the next-best thing.) Since you guys live in the SFV, & especially since this trip is to LV, I'd only use 15W-50 (all year-round). But really, for a quick choice, any Mobil 1 of 0W-30 or heavier will be fine for now.
Many quack-lubes offer either Mobil 1 or Amsoil as an option, but you pay for the privilege of having them do the job.
Yes, you can use other easily-available "synthetic" oils (like Valvolive, Castrol, etc), but don't expect them to offer as much protection or last as long.
