power steering noise

New problem just started this week. My power steering pump is making lots of noise...it's a whine that seems to be related to engine speed (ie, pump speed), whenever there's a load on the power steering. Large motions of the wheel, especially when the car isn't moving, make a lot of noise, but there's no noise when I just let the wheel sit straight. The problem goes away, but only after about 20 minutes of driving.
I haven't yet checked the power steering fluid level, but I will this afternoon. I thought I smelled something similar to burning coolant the other day.
I know people have reported sudden loss of power steering fluid, but there was no catastrophic event in my case, and power steering still works, albeit noisily. If I'm low on fluid, where should I look for a leak?
I was planning to drive about 600 miles this weekend. If I'm low on fluid, and I refill, how worried should I be?
