The listed filter thickness is the thickness of the filter surround. The filter media element is probably the same thickness for all of these.
The filter boxes are not symetrical after being in service. They distort with heat and time. The K&N will conform to the box shape*. If you install the filter swapped end for end after servicing it, then the filter may not seal and could have a perimeter leak. A used filter will be dirt stained at the back end and this will persist after cleaning. So you can tell which end goes to the back, at the opposite end from the snorkle or inlet.
* The K&N filter, once it conforms to the air box shape, will not re-conform later on. It simply changes it shape. This shape change required heat, time and pressure. Where there is a gap from being re-oriented later on, any resultant gap is not going to close up. It is not a foam surround that will de-compress and get larger. Thats why K&N sells grease for the filter surround. This is not needed if you position the same way every time.
