Dealer trades.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: question about dealers, Rudy, Tue, 21 Oct 2003 15:39:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Usually it's a pretty straightforward process. Dealer B will either sell dealer A the car outright in which case dealer A will send two drivers or a truck to pickup the car or dealer B will arrange for a swap so that dealer A can send only the car to be swapped and one driver. Sometimes dealer B will be less than gentlemanly and require something in return that isn't equitable, but most often they just sell the car and don't want anything back. Once in awhile dealer B will have a customer on the car and will deny access to the car to dealer A until they know their deal is going nowhere.
Sometimes late in convertible season, when they are in short supply, you can only trade for a convertible if you have one to give back for example. Same with other hard to get cars, but that doesn't often happen with Saabs. Usually a dealer is happy to relieve their inventory by selling the car to the other dealer.
Dealer A may be very sticky about having to buy or trade a car for you from another dealer. They'll want you to be sure of your selection and that your payment arrangements are all in place so they don't get stuck with the car if you change your mind or something happens to the car in transit or your situation changes. Selling a car out of stock has none of these unintended consequences and serves to reduce the inventory so they may try extra hard to please you on a car in stock.
Dealers more than 100-200 miles apart also complicates matters as the cost for the dealer trade starts to become too expensive to allow for when you've negotiated a good price.
