Check to see that the belt is properly indexed into all grooved wheels and not off by a tooth etc. Check the belt for any signs of distress or wearing edges. Have a good look around with a flash light.
With a not-hot engine, slacken and loosen the serp belt to get is clear of the crank shaft. Start the engine and let it idle, rev it up a bit. Note any sounds while all of the belt driven accessories are isolated. Don't idle for long as there is no coolant circulation. Now shut down. Grab all of the driven wheels and turn them by hand and note if anything feels unsual.
Alternators are 3 phase AC generators with an interal recifier bank. If one of the phases goes bad, windings or diodes, the alternator can create a high pitch noise. Sometimes that will leak into audio gear. When this happens, there will not be anything wrong with the way it rotates and you will not feel such a problem when you rotate it.
If the sounds do not occur with a cold engine, you can do the above test on a warm or hot engine, but it will not be pleasant work and you may get some burns.
I would hesitate to take the vehicle out of town until the problem is fixed or better understood.
There have been a few reports of noisy water pumps.
