Saab has always done a lot of running upgrades to their vehicles. So I suspect that the "1,100" improvements may apply to the 1994 NG900 verses the 1999 9^3? As the owner of a 1998 900SET, my vehicle was on the cusp of the change, over having the cummulative changes in the NG900 but lacking the 9^3 improvements.

Anyway, I understand that while HP was increased in the 9^3, the gearing was also made taller resulting in better gas mileage but slower acceleration. The front suspension was improved for greater wheel travel, T-7 engine controller, Pioneer instead of Clarion stereo (a step backward in sound quality though), steering wheel mounted radio controls, better intercooler (Viggen style), better air intake design, new seat design with side air bags added, new anti-whiplass headrest design, dash mounted cup holder, intermittant wipers, brake upgrade, high mount brake light repositioned, new bumpers and trim, shorter serpertine belt, and a few more items I am sure I have forgotten.

Shared problems between the NG900 and 9^3 include the need for a rear sway bar and steering rack brace for good handling, Marginal shock absorbers and tires for performance driving, no sound deadening in the hatch floor, sqeaks and rattles, etc.

So the 9^3 is probably better than the NG900 but evolutionarily so. The revolution started with the 9^3SS, for better or worse.
