Am I getting fleeced? (+++)

This is actually regarding my wife's '96 Accord. The mid-pipe on her exhaust rusted through the other night. I bought the new pipe and attempted to do the repair myself. After getting under the car, removing the bottom heat shield over the cat (JUST the bottom shield since the O2 sensor plugs in through the top half of the shield) I saw that there was no way I'd be able to get the flange between the pipe and the cat apart. Brought it to an idie. They completed the repair yesterday, but when I picked the car up, the CHECK ENGINE light came on. O2 sensor? The mechanic said it must have just come on b/c he never saw it on (meaning it came on for the first time while at the garage). I brought the car back this morning to be told that the 02 sensor on the cat was now "bad" and that they could replace it for $309! They said the vibration of the bad exhaust could have loosened it just enough to "short it out". My first inclination is to think they should replace it since it was fine when I picked it up, but suddenly bad after they did the work and re-attached the bottom heat shield. 3 other garages (including a Honda dealer) all said it was probably the fault of the mechanic, but almost impossible to prove. Am I just gonna get screwed w/ this? How can I bring this up w/ the mechanic w/o him getting defensive?
