a bad relay (more likely since your trouble seems temp. related) or a lamp out that is causing temporary confusion in the relay (less likely).

My '99 9-3 recently had the passenger side fog lamp fail. Upon failure my high beams did not function normally (passenger side high beam worked, driver side high beam did not, no blue dash indicator).

I was not worried about replacing the fog lamp immediately, thought it was the relay for high beams (small gray unit) and replaced for $15 at the dealer. No change in operation.

While looking into finding the larger and more expensive orange light relay (controls the overall operation of headlights & tail lights) I went ahead and replaced the burned out fog lamp element. After doing so the high beams work normally.

Found a parts car in the SAABNet classifieds and bought a used orange relay for $20 (much better deal than dealer price of $100+) just in case. Haven't used it yet.

Anyway, the outcome is this:

- Check all of your lamps for normal operation
- Replace any if burnt out
- No fix or not applicable? Try the smaller gray high beam relay first ($15, why not?).
- Still no fix? Get the larger orange light relay new from dealer or hang out in the classifieds and see if you can locate a used one via a parts car.

There's always a chance it can be something else (lose connector, burnt wire, etc.) but thought my experience might help avoid hours of poking about under the hood looking for the source of the voodoo.

A hard one to duplicate at the dealer short of an overnight visit to allow cooling. Might just have to fix yourself and then see if SAAB will extend courtesy with reimbursement (never tried, not sure if that is even possible) or wrestle with dealer refund via warranty claim.
