I don't think this is necessarily true. The 5.5 time is based on drop-clutch launches and is not a street launch time. I think the main thing that it depends on is the driver and how well they shift as well when you are considering cars with a difference of 1.5 sec or so in rated 'magazine' times.
As an example, I had friend who had a Mustang GT (the 5.0 engine) which has 0-60 time under 6 sec and I had a 9000 CSE Turbo with a time of 7.7 sec. We raced and I was with him toe-to-toe and he was suprised.
What I'm saying is that with a rated difference of 1.5 sec, a lot depends on the driver. Obviously an M3 will smoke a 9-3. Also a stock 9-3 SE or Vector in the mid-range will definitely keep with a G35. Where it will lose is the launch and 0-25mph.
