Hey guys,
I took at look at an '01 9-3 SE 5spd today for a friend. Having had some experience with my '99 SE, I figured I might be able to spot a few things. I did, but could use some input on the following. I put the car up on a lift.
1. There seems to be some kind of oil leak around the rear portion of the oil pan. I'm not sure if it's the gasket, or some seal. It might have been from a previous issue, but I doubt it. There was a drop of oil about to drip down from the drain plug. There's oil spattered around near the passenger side wheel, and also some visible signs of leakage from the opposite side of the pain, near the main bearing? But the front side of the pain seems clean.
2. There's another leak, more strange. Yellow fluid. Not antifreeze. It was on the AC lines running accross the front end. Or are those intercooler lines? Regardless, there was some yellow oil on them, plus I think the underside of the turbo (eg., a few drops ready to fall).
The dealer claims the car was smoking out the exhaust at startup. I didn't see that though as it was already warm.
Anyone have some useful input as to what the above might be?
Thanks,
Nemo
1. Some kind of oil leak underneath. Not clear if it's from a current problem or a previous one that was fixed. Personally, I'm suspicious. I'm checking with my online Saab buddies to get more details on what the leak might be (given it's location and appearance).
2. Another fluid leak of which I'm not at all sure. It could be power steering fluid or even brake fluid. I'm checking more on this too.
3. Internal display (clock, date, mpg, etc...) has several bad pixels. This needs to be fixed.
4. Rear lower spoiler has been dented. Just a cosmetic thing, but surely something which will bring the car's value down.
5. Car needs new tires.
If you really want the car, I would suggest bringing it over to the Saab dealer and having a pre-sales inspection done. It costs about $70. But the leaks I saw are potentially serious problems. Also, if the car doesn't have any kind of factory warranty, you could end up paying some serious cash if something breaks (eg., power steering pump is $500+, oil pan gasket is around the same).
Lastly, I saw that they have a 2001 Saab (non SE) automatic over at Brown. It's a certified Saab, which means it has a warranty for the next 5 years / 100k miles. It's black. They want about the same price. IMHO, that car might be a better deal.
I'll let you know when I have more info on #1 and #2 once I hear back from my Saab buddies.
