Same thing, but without warning. I was out to start my wifes 1999 9-3. The key went in , but didn't budge. I thought perhaps I was using the key to my 9-5. I tried turning the wheel, moving the ATF out of Park, etc. Nothing!
I called my mechanic and he recommended I hit it with WD40. I questioned him, because I know locks should use a dry lube, like graphite. He said graphite at this point would not do much.
So I hit it liberally with WD40. After it worked in for a few minutes the key started turning. An hour later, it turned completely and started! I had it replaced later that day for about $70.
As for your troubles, I would try graphite first. If that doesn't work, you may want to get the ignition changed as I did. Good luck!
