Here's a picture of the front brakes, from eeuroparts.com.
The caliper is #3, you can see that through the wheel. The pads are #2, but they're located 'inside' the caliper. You'll be able to see their edges. The pads are the part that actually presses against the surface of the rotor. One on each side. The outboard one is easy to see, for the inboard one you probably have to take off the wheel.
Each pad is a steel backing plate with thick (1/2"??) friction material attached. The friction material wears away; so when it gets real thin you replace the pads. BEFORE it wears away to nothing.
I forget the spec, it's probably something like 1 or 2mm thick. If it's at least that thick, then you can be reasonably confident they'll last until the next time you service the car.
