Odor coming from vents with heat on

This is my first winter with my '01 9-3 SE, so obviously this is the first time I have needed the heat. I've started to notice a strange odor when the heat is on, and am wondering if there is any explanation.
It smells like -- well, it's hard to explain. Do you know those little cube refrigerators in motel rooms? It smells like one of those that's been empty for way too long. That's the only way to describe it.
If I put the thermostat all the way down so that cold air starts coming out, the odor goes away. And likewise, if I press the ECON button, the odor goes away as well.
Is this similar to anything anyone has ever seen (err, smelled) before?
Thanks,
-jim
PS: I'm kind of reminded of that Seinfeld episode where he gets his car back from the valet and there's a horrible B.O. odor :-)
