I'm also in Cambridge, and I also have a '99 9-3, so hopefully I can tell you a bit about our cars in the snow...

I drove through last winter on all-season 195/60-15s. I did a couple trips to New York through some bad snow, including the blizzard just after New Year's. Overall, the car handled pretty well. I had a few issues with it not tracking well when I hit slushy patches, but that was my only complaint.

My other problem last winter was a lack of traction on dry roads when it was cold, because the rubber in my tires is designed for higher temperatures.

I want snow tires for my car, but I'm not sure if it's in the budget for this winter. If I do get them, I'm thinking 195/60-15. The narrower tires would help the car track better in the slush, but with the deep tread of a snow tire, I think the 195s would do well enough for me. The wider 195s would be much better on dry or icy roads.

I guess it's a question of what you're more interested in...handling on dry roads and traction on ice (195), or stability in deep snow and slush (185). With the FWD in the Saab, I'm not so worried about the latter. That's why I'd go with the 195/60-15.
