Battery Acid leak

I added some distilled water to the battery a little while back as it seemed a bit low. I thought I had left enough room, filling up to about 1/2" to the top in all cells. Cleaned the area good and replaced the covers well ensuring a good fit. I noticed a spot on the driveway one day obviously battery acid. Sure enough, the battery had leaked out some hitting the power steering hardpipe bubbling the black paint on the pipe. I removed the bubbled paint off the metal pipe, but want to make sure that it is okay. I checked around that area to make sure that the battery acid didn't eat holes in any rubber lines and it looks like it has not. It did hit the IC outlet hose but has not seemed to have damaged it.
Questions I stiil have:
Did I overfill the battery?
Where should it be filled to in each cell?
Anything I should check in that area that the acid could have affected?
