Selling your own car can be tough. For some folks nothing's too tough, they make everything look easy, but here's a short list of things to consider.
Wholesale-retail split. Ever try and trade in a piece of electronic or office equipment or an appliance. The point is that cars have a smaller difference between retail and wholesale than any other consumer product. That still may amount to thousands, but percentage wise cars bring good money even at the wholesale level. Most industrial products have almost no resale.
Financing, trade ins, convienent location, business hours, professional sales staff, mega advertising budget are just a few of the dealers unfair adavantages vs the private party seller. Folks have to be overly resourceful to buy from private parties, most aren't.
Security, strangers at your house, liability, DMV hassles, time and effort are other reasons to think twice about doing it yourself.
Older cars in a cash price range are perfect for private sellers. Newer cars that compete with new cars, sure you can sell it yourself, but it's a hassle.
