The TB is just machined die-cast aluminum alloy, just like the old ones. You cannot harm the finish, becuase its just metal.
To clean, remove the supply tube and clean the TB bore. A cloth with mild paint thinners works well on the older TBs. You would really only need carb cleaner if there were hard deposits like the IAC unit got (you don't have one of those). You need to open the throttle to clean properly. And when the throttle is open, clean the exposed edge of the plate. Some paper towel. wet with solvent can be put into the bore and the plate allowd to close on that, to clean the other edge of the TP. You could use carb spray, but if you do, remember that it is a degreaser. Add a drop of engine oil to each pivot after if you use the carb spray.
It usually takes a few years for TB deposits to accummulate. But with the MTB taking over the IAC function, deposits might build up faster than one would expect. And the mortorized TB might be easily upset by the mechanical interference of deposits that would never be noticed with a foot controlled throttle.
Getting the supply tube off is not as easy as with the T5's. You have two hose clamps, the BPV and map/iat sensor to deal with as well as a bolted connection to the engine.
