If you aren't going to regret getting an automatic, I say go for it. It seems like they fixed the major problems before the 2000 model year. Price sounds very fair; I paid more than that for a 1999 5-speed with 42,000 miles a year ago. Look around for a 5-speed, though...check the classifieds on this site, as well, if you haven't already.
Get the full service records from the dealer and make sure everything looks kosher...regular oil changes, no major damage, etc. Look for a leaking headgasket and problems with the heater controls, as AlexD said, but I think those problems were primarily on the 1999 models.
If you really want a 5-speed, do spend a little time looking for one. Where are you? Some areas of the country have enough Saabs that you should be able to find what you're looking for. Check the classifieds on this site if you haven't already.
