varies dependant on system temperature and pressure. fyi, the expansion tank in a saab coolant system is pressurized. be very careful opening the lid on the expansion tank even if the engine is only moderately warm.
if both checks you performed were when the engine was cold (like, just before leaving in the morning), most likely the 0.5in difference noted could have been cause by the change in ambient temperature over the past 3 months.
unless you note a puddle or drops where you park your car or the expansion tank is out of range at the hot or cold marks, then i wouldn't worry just yet. remember to only adjust the level when the car is completely cold and with 50 to 70% mixture of coolant and distilled water.
it would not be a bad idea to get some saab blue coolant to have on hand. the blue stuff (OEM for your car) is not toxic and costs about $18 per gallon at the dealer. you will need an other container to mix it with a gallon of distilled water. the green stuff (prestone, etc) is compatible with the saab blue stuff in a pinch. if it were me, in a pinch, i'd just add distilled water versus the any other brand coolant.
btw, if you have a 2000 and have not flushed the radiator yet (approx 2 gal worth of fluid total), it may well be worth doing now. or a whole system flush.
if it were me, i'd opt for the oem saab blue fluid or equivalent due to its toxicity, or lack there of, and chemical composition. coolant varies quite a bit. the crap end being the dexcool GM loong life garbage to several other excellent varities. if you do a search on this and the general bulletin board you will find a lot of discussion about coolant type. the best info comes from Swedecar (aka Anders in the past).
