The 0-40 is the only one of the two that meets A3/B3 standards (I think...those could be wrong but in any case it meets the highest standards for oil ratings).
What it really comes down to is making sure you change at appropriate intervals and use a quality filter with the oil. I doubt your engine will fair any better with either oil weight choice in the long run as long as it is changed.
If you are switching over from dino or even semi-syn an engine flush wouldn't be a bad idea. Amsoil has a good product for this or you can add a milder flush that works over a longer period of time.
I use the 0-40 in my '00 9-3 and in my '94T-conv. The 1990 gets heavier oil because it's a leaker and it keeps the engine a bit quieter. I'm in SE Massachusetts by the way....temps get pretty cold in the winter.
