Bottom line is the the DIC is under constant stress and should likely be replaced at 50K or sooner if a T7 during routine maintenance. I realize this is expensive, but he used DIC can be stowed an as emergency spare in the hatch should the newer DIC fail.
and see http://www.saabclub.com/237/di-cass.htm for information about possible symptoms of DIC failures in 9000s.
Importantly, all the research I have seen points to the conclusion that this problem while annoying is infrequent before 50K. Fewer than 2% of all DICs in service. However, one should replace the DIC or least carry a spare once the odometer hits 50K. As others have stated, there are any number of mechnical failues that can render your car suddenly inoperable including loss of oil pressure, belt or chain breaks, battery failure, ECM failure, multiple flat tires etc., no one can guard against all eventualities. But rest assurred, the likelihood that a DIC failure will be life threatening is nearly nil since none of us are airborne or seaborne in our SAABs so keep it in perspective. One or two firestone tire failures with FORD Explorers caused far more harm than all the DIC failures combined. So lets not get too crazy about an annoyance and inconvenience.
