Hi Eric,
First off, I'd NEVER run the Saab OE semi syn for more than 5k miles in a Saab turbo (especially now that they've "downgraded" it from ACEA A3 to ACEA A1). As a matter of fact, if I lived in Houston, I'd never run anything other than Mobil 1 15W-50 year-round. Yeah, I know it's not a "preferred" choice for most folks, but recent Used Oil Analyses (over on an oil-only website) have shown that Saab turbos are pretty tough on oil. The M1 15W-50 maintains a better oil film & has a better additive package for the type of abuse our engines create. And no, it won't void your warranty to do the changes yourself. Keep your receipts to show what you've done, & track everything in your Records book.
And I wouldn't wait any longer than necessary to get the old stuff outta there. If that means after New Years, then that's fine. But if you can switch over to a premium (PAO/Group IV) full syn sooner, your engine will be better off in the long run.
Now that I've said what I'd do, have you asked the dealer about "upgrading" to the Saab OE 0W-30 full syn? They might only add on $2 or $3 per liter, & that may solve all your worries.
