DOT 5 is a silicone based brake fluid and is not hydroscopic (will not absorb moisture) but that prperty means that moisture will be trapped in pockets instead of absorbed like DOT 3/4 fluid. These pockets of moisture will lead to spongy brake pedal and corrosion of the brake system.
DOT 5 brake fluid also traps air more easily than DOT 3/4 brake fluid and is more compressible than DOT 3/4 brake fluid. DOT 5 brake fluid is therefore NOT recommended for ABS brake systems.
There have been reports of DOT 5 being incapatabilty with some brake system seals. This may be due to incomplete purging of the sytem of all traces of DOT 3/4 brake fluid as a mixture of DOT 3/4 and DOT 5 brake fluids is known to cause the rubber seals to deteriorate.
