If I understand you right, you're talking about the C-pillar plastic trim piece? That's a tricky piece to get secure. I've had mine off. It's secured in part by thin little 2-3" plastic rods that run from the back of the plastic trim to the metal body of the car - they span the hollow distance between the plastic trim piece and the metal body. They are part of the molded plastic trim, are sort of "T" shaped on the very end, and secure into little plastic receptors attached to the metal. I believe I recall them sliding into the receptors from the top. A couple of mine were loose, and yes, caused squeaks. Also caused that C-pillar trim to fall down from the headliner.
Other sources of rattles I've found in the rear hatch area, in addition to those mentioned, are the screws holding the rear passenger seat grab handles (too tight or too loose causes the headliner to creak, constant battle to get adjusted just right on my car), and where the cargo lid rests on the plastic ledges around the rear speakers (put loop side velcro on ledge, got rid of BIG source of squeaks and creaks).
Please be patient with my descriptions above - engineers are rolling their eyes, I know!
