I've found a few posts by others with a similar problem to the one I'm experiencing, but no conclusive fixes, and they weren't very recent. Thought I'd repost and try to get an answer.
I purchased a 95 900 SET with 60,000 miles last September and had some routine maintenance done, including a flush and fill of the manual transmission. It seemed difficult to shift at the time, particularly going into 3rd gear and reverse, but I just assumed that this was normal. My repair person, a SAAB specialist who I believe is very knowledgable and capable, couldn't find anything wrong with the transmission. Over time, the problem seemed to get better rather than worse. I figured that I had just adjusted my shifting style to suit the car, though now I'm not sure.
Last Saturday, while driving around town, my clutch cable went out. I couldn't get the car into any gear. I towed it to my mechanic, who confirmed the problem and replaced the clutch cable. After making the repair, he called me and told me that the car was "shifing better than ever" and thought that we had solved the stiff transmission problems I had complained about when I bought the car. When I picked the car up, I agreed with him. It was smooth as silk ... for about the first 10 miles.
The situation as it stands now is that the transmission is super smooth for the first few miles the car is driven, but after the car has warmed up sufficiently and I've been through the gears many times it starts to get stiff, i.e. difficult to shift in all gears and impossible to get into reverse without turning off the car (it just grinds when going into reverse out of neutral). Now, I'm thinking that the new clutch cable has perhaps made this old gearbox problem more noticable. Perhaps the worn clutch cable was masking the gearbox problem? I'd appreciate any advice about what is going on here. I plan to call my mechanic on Tuesday morning tp fill him in, but I'd appreciate anyone who has had similar problems letting me know what the fix was.
Thanks in advance!
