Brake pads & rotors wear out fast or slow depending on how & where you drive. Some people go thru them every 20k miles, some people make them last 90k. It depends way to strong on your habits, you can't schedule a mileage.
You can see the rotors & the outboard pads just by looking between the spokes of the wheels. The rotors might get scored or grooved. It's normal for them to get shiny & wear down. You can get them resurfaced, until they don't have enough thickness left. Some folks don't like that, they just replace them.
The pads have friction material that wears away. The inboard pads have a little metal tab that rubs on the rotor & makes a horrible screetching sound, when they're worn down. You can see the outboard pad thru the wheel. It's not a bad idea to learn what they are, & look at them when you check/adjust your tire pressure. (You do that regularly, right? ;-)
