1) DI - From posts here, it appears that there is a sooner failure rate with the black DIs. But then again, this may be biased because most post here with issues and suggestions, not to say, hey I am on the original at 200K. My red one lasted until this past week (136K), so it appears I am one of the lucky ones. Yes, reds are available; try the site sponsors! Someone may have purchased a black one with the intent of moving to a newer Saab. Therefore, they would be able to swap their new one to the newer (T7) Saab, and at least know the history. Can go from original Red to Black, but not original Black to Red (although a few reported yes on the red, but only for a short time).

2) Noise - whichever you decide to purchase, take it to a dealer or indy (independant of where owner currently takes it) to have a pre-purchase inspection done. It might set you back $100, but at least it will give you details of what may or may not be wrong. This can then be used to have current owner fix, or pointed out to lower price. I know you indicated you would, but I felt it needed to be restated. Perhaps mention the nosie to them and they can help track it down. The inspection normally includes a list of what needs attention and cost as well.

3) Fast - "Out of the box" it will never be a Viggen, but you can get there with some heavier mods, and get more enjoyment with fewer mods. There is a noticeable difference in my running a "HOT" ECU from a 99 SE in my 1997 NG900. It spools up sooner, and stays on longer with a bump in torque. Is it as much as an Aero or Viggen, no, but helps. There are several other mods that will have you to, and past the HOT version with minor $ spent and parts. A lot is DIY, but I don't know if you are a DIYer or not. In addition, the T5 is much more "tuner-friendly" whereas the T7 is more of a consistant performer.

To get 200+ one would need to the mods you mentioned, but there are a few missing. Search on the NG900 board for Deans list by using drs[underscore]list and you will find the recommended "cheap" mods. Substitute the "_" for "[underscore]" when searching. Basically you are looking at intake and exhaust changes, then the Intercooler, which is the main difference in 1999 between the HOT 200s and the NOT 185s. Adding the Viggen intercooler makes up approximately 10hp of the difference and will help with spool-time and responsiveness/consistancy while on boost. The IC may be the "safe, more power" mod, but all of Dean's List is a good way to start. Basically all are "safe" and the synergy of them will get you what you are looking for. The DP is sort of after all of the previous, unless doing the entire exhaust at once.

4) Sport button - Mike Lynch (a sponsor dealer) answered that.

5) Steering and Suspension - a must! Each suspension/steering change adds useable power, in that it allows one to use what's there more effectively. Braking is also a concern, so at the least, don't cheap on tires. MP Performance products are good from my experiences and Chris always stands by their products!! They are a good value, as they were "born" out of a group buy (I was in) that transformed into something a little bit more. A must is the sway bar either from there, SAS, or at GenuineSaab.com (site sponsor). A very cheap, easy, extremely effective upgrade to handling. The rest is up to your tastes.

Please note that I am driving a 1997 NG900. This is an SE, 5-door, manual, and my daily driver. I do take long trips with it, and yet I continue to modify it. Unfortunately, it is an addiction, and once you do one thing, you yearn to do more. Good luck as it is hard to stop... And welcome! Thanks.
