The dealer would've had to take off the original gearshift knob, which usually involves destroying it. If they didn't want to destroy it, I'm sure it took them a long, long time to remove it. My guess would be that when they got it back on (or put a new one on), it was much easier to take off, and the audio shop had an easy time popping it off to get to the reverse lock-out sleeve.
